Reporting Code for Domestic Violence and Child Abuse – Ayurveda WorksPrepared by: Veronica Rivera-Santander, Ayurvedic Practitioner and owner of Ayurveda Works
Introduction
At Ayurveda Works, I take the well-being and safety of my clients very seriously. As a certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and owner of this practice, I recognize my legal and ethical responsibilities under the Dutch Reporting Code for Domestic Violence and Child Abuse (Wet verplichte meldcode huiselijk geweld en kindermishandeling). This code helps me respond quickly and appropriately when there is any suspicion of domestic violence or child abuse.
Step-by-Step Protocol
Step 1: Identifying signs of domestic violence or child abuse
As an Ayurvedic Practitioner, I pay attention to signs that may indicate domestic violence or child abuse, such as:
- Unexplained injuries or bruises
- Changes in behavior, such as fear, anxiety, depression, or exhaustion
- Tension or unusual dynamics in how clients or their family members communicate
- Clients sharing in confidence that they or their children are victims of abuse
When I observe any of these signs, I proceed with sensitivity, care, and discretion.
Step 2: Consulting with a colleague or expert
If I suspect domestic violence or child abuse, I confidentially consult with an expert, such as a social worker, psychologist, or my professional association, to determine the best course of action. No personal client details are shared unless absolutely necessary to assess the situation.
Step 3: Conversation with the client
If the situation allows, I speak with the client to express my concerns. This conversation is always held respectfully and in a safe, confidential environment. The purpose is to understand the situation and explore available resources for support.
- If the conversation may endanger the client or feels unsafe, I may proceed directly to the next step.
Step 4: Assessing the situation
If the situation appears serious or the client is unable to talk openly, I carefully weigh the risks and evaluate the severity and potential consequences for the safety of the client or others involved.
Step 5: Reporting to Veilig Thuis (Safe Home)
If the risk is high or immediate, I contact Veilig Thuis, the Dutch national center for domestic violence and child abuse. They provide guidance and help in making formal reports.
The reporting process includes:
- Contacting Veilig Thuis via the national phone number: 0800-2000
- Sharing the necessary information so they can assess the situation—always with respect for the client’s privacy and confidentiality
In the case of a minor, I may report without the consent of the parents or guardians if necessary to protect the child’s safety.
Privacy and Confidentiality
All information related to suspected domestic violence or child abuse is treated with strict confidentiality. Information is only shared if required by law or if essential to ensure the client’s safety.
Reports and documentation are recorded in the client’s file in full compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR/AVG).
Responsibility
As the owner of Ayurveda Works, I, Veronica Rivera-Santander, am personally responsible for implementing and upholding this reporting code. I also ensure that clients are informed of this code and that it is consistently followed in my practice.
