Think Ayurveda Is Spiritual Fluff? Let’s Talk Science

When people hear the word Ayurveda, many think of incense, mysticism, and “woo-woo” spirituality. But let’s take the woo-woo out of Ayurveda for a moment and look at what it really is: a logical, timeless science of life.

You may have heard people say that Ayurveda speaks about “three types of people.” That’s not correct. Ayurveda is about doshas — the three forces or principles of nature that live in every body and mind. These doshas are called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Think about it: look around you. Everybody is different, right?
Different body shapes. Different personalities. Different food preferences. Different ways of digesting life and emotions.
So why do we still get told that one health solution, one diet, or one lifestyle should fit us all?

The Doshas: Your Personal Constitution

Your prakriti (constitution) is your unique mix of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This is what makes you you.

  • Vata is movement and flow. People with more Vata often have lighter, thinner frames, creative minds, quick thinking — but also tendencies toward restlessness, worry, and irregular digestion. They love change, excitement, and creativity, but dislike routine and feeling “stuck.”
  • Pitta is fire and transformation. More Pitta gives a medium, muscular frame, sharp features, strong digestion, drive, leadership, and ambition. They’re passionate and focused but can tip into anger, impatience, and burnout. They love challenges and intensity, but dislike incompetence and inefficiency.
  • Kapha is stability and structure. More Kapha shows up as a stronger, broader build, endurance, calmness, loyalty, and compassion. They are steady and grounded but can lean toward sluggishness, attachment, or resistance to change. They love comfort, routine, and closeness, but dislike too much pressure or fast change.

Every one of us has all three — just in different proportions.

Ayurveda Is Physiology

Let’s take the stomach as an example.

  • The peristaltic movement of the stomach (that wave-like motion that pushes food through)? That’s Vata. Movement. Rules the nervous system.
  • The stomach lining that protects against acid? That’s Kapha. Coating, protection, stability.
  • The gastric acid and enzymes that digests food? That’s Pitta. Fire, transformation.

How is this woo-woo? It’s pure physiology.
If Vata, Pitta, or Kapha are out of balance in the body or mind, things stop working properly. That’s exactly what modern medicine also agrees on — imbalance leads to disease. The difference? Ayurveda takes the time to find the root cause.

Healing Is a Journey, Not a Pill

In Ayurveda, healing isn’t about suppressing symptoms. It’s about restoring balance with tools that are practical and deeply human:

  • Calming the nervous system
  • Eating food that suits your body and digestion
  • Warm and loving relationships
  • Stress management that works for you
  • Having a job that you actually enjoy
  • Taking care of your finances (yes, money stress is a major source of health problems!)
  • Daily routines that bring rhythm and healing into your life

It’s not a magic pill. It’s a journey. That’s why my practice is called Ayurveda Works — because you have to work, and I work with you. And at the end of the day… it works.

Isn’t that awesome?
